The Black Forest Society

In 1864 the Black Forest Society was founded by restaurateurs and industrialists in Freiburg. The main aim of the society back then was to make people aware of the Black Forest and to establish routes so that they could discover its beauty. The number of trails, paths, observations towers and hiking lodges that had sprung up so soon after it was founded showed they had done their job.

They also produce dillustrated books, hiking maps and hiking guides with the aim of ensuring that visitors to the Black Forest had an enjoyable stay. In this respect, the oldest German hiking association was the pioneer of today's tourism industry and a forerunner of the local spa administration authorities.

Trails and Hiking

Today, with over 86 000 members in 242 local groups, the Black Forest Society is still synonymous with designated hiking trails and hiking experts. Approx. 23 000 km of hiking trails are marked, monitored and in some cases also maintained by more than 300 volunteer wardens. The trails and paths through deep ravines such as Wutach Gorge, which is sometimes almost alpine in tis conditions, require a lot of work throghout the year in order to ensure the highest levels of safety for hikers. Local groups offer their members and visitors a wide range of leisure activities from hiking to walking, cycling, mountain biking, skiing and canoeing. Many of the activities are run by trained and qualified hiking guides.
