Culture, naturally

Of course the “Black Forest“ conjures up first and foremost visions of forests, nature and natural relaxation in most of our visitors’ minds. But the Black Forest has more to offer than that. Take the city of Karlsruhe, for instance, candidate for European Culture Capital in 2010.

The traditional Bollenhut hat

The Bollenhut traditional hat with its pompoms suits the Black Forest particularly well. People all over the world are always glad to see it. As a symbol, as a trademark.
The Bollenhut hat, however, is traditionally only worn in three parishes: Gutach, Wolfach-Kirnbach and Hornberg-Reichenbach.

Castles and churches

Numerous castles, churches and monasteries as well as monuments and the picturesque, historical old sectors of towns bear witness to the past, where today we can stroll around and marvel. Of world renown is the UNESCO world heritage site the "Maulbronn Monastery".

Myhts and legends

The Black Forest stretches from Karlsruhe as far as the Upper Danube and from Pforzheim to Lörrach , with pine forests, clearings, valleys and mountain lakes. There are monasteries, castles and ruins - wonderful places where wonderful things happen, from which stories can unfold: sinister, comical, fanciful, mystic and mythical.

Dialects in Black Forest

Dialects? Yes, in the plural: there is no one single, uniform Black Forest dialect. The spectrum of sounds and vocabulary used by people from the Black Forest is just as varied as the landscape - which might seem quite uniform, but only on first sight, its different house-styles and traditional costumes. But what differences there are between the way the locals speak in Pforzheim and in Lörrach, and how different the dialect sounds when it is spoken by someone from Waldshut compared to what you will hear in the area around Karlsruhe!
