Nowhere else is there so much walking

The varied landscape in the Black Forest is ideal for sporting activities of all sorts. Especially hikers and Nordic walking enthusiasts feel particularly at home on the slopes of Germany's south west mountain range. From the vineyards on the western slopes and towards the Rhine to the gorges of the east, from the thick forest of the north to the sunny mountain ridges of the south with their spectacular views, and in the Black Forest itself - the most beautiful walking routes are to be found.

Winter in the Black Forest

Fir trees laden with snow, wide expanses of glistening white, pure winter wonderland. Numerous pistes and cross-country trails, toboggan runs and skating rinks promise perfect winter fun in this the biggest skiing area in the German Mittelebirge mountains.

Walking was invented in the Black Forest

It was Philipp Bussemer from Baden-Baden who, at the end of the last century, opened what was probably the first tourist information centre in the Black Forest next to his haberdashery shop. For him, publishing hiking maps and numerous hiking guides for the Black Forest Society was more important than his career.

Health facts in Nordic Walking

* Heart rate is 5-17 beats per minute higher (for example in normal walking heart rate is 130 beats/minute and in Nordic Walking 147 beats per minute i.e. increase is 13%)

* Energy consumption increases when using poles by an average of 20% compared with ordinary walking without poles

* Up to a 46% increase in energy consumption (Cooper Institute research, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sports 2002 publication)

Golf in the Black Forest

The Black Forest is one of Germany’s most popular and well-known low mountain ranges. The Black Forest Society

In 1864 the Black Forest Society was founded by restaurateurs and industrialists in Freiburg. The main aim of the society back then was to make people aware of the Black Forest and to establish routes so that they could discover its beauty. The number of trails, paths, observations towers and hiking lodges that had sprung up so soon after it was founded showed they had done their job.

100 Years of the West Route

In 1900, the tow hiking pioneers philipp Bussemer from Baden-Baden and Julius Kaufmann from Lahr were commissioned by the Black Forest Society to establish and mark the first long-distance hiking route from Pforzheim to Basle.
