Beauty made in the Black Forest – natural cosmetics from the Black Forest
Mirror, mirror on the wall… After looking into the mirror, reaching for the cosmetics often seems to be the only salvation. All well and good if it contains natural cosmetics. Natural ingredients are an extra plus in the beauty-care products of the Black Forest. They are produced with active components of spruce or fir needles, for example.
The tallest tree in the Black Forest is the silver fir, which can grow to a height of 65 metres. The Siebentäler Spring in Bad Herrenalb profits from the natural healing power of its needles. They are collected in all the forests around the sanatorium in the northern Black Forest and provide the basic element for the “Prißenitz-Package”, named after the “water-doctor” Vincenz Prießnitz (1799-1851). He traced inner diseases back to “bad juices” that had to be extracted from the body. The body is therefore treated with a mixture made from fir needles, fir cone oil, evening primrose oil and honey, which is then covered in foil. Wrapped up like this, the ingredients can unfold perfectly in the “Softpack-tub”. This treatment is analgesic and relaxing.

At the shore of the Lake Schluchsee, the hotelier Ferdinand Thoma collects the delicate green spruce needle sprouts that are found in the forest surrounding his hotel. Out of these he produces the “Fichtel-Wichtel”- cosmetics for aroma massages, fizzy baths and peelings. His spruce needle cosmetics are tightening, purifying, stimulate the metabolism and revitalise. Thoma also offers spruce-tea or spruce-liquors in his hotel. A biological cheese maker even uses the spruce needles for an alpine cheese.
